Students from Leek High Specialist Technology School joined with Westwood College and Endon High School for a joint careers advice evening in Leek last Thursday.
Representatives from local industry, educational institutions and the armed forces gathered at Westwood College to inform teenagers of their options post 16. And Leek High’s own student ambassadors, Amy Condrey and Corina Pickering, both 17, spoke to young people and their parents about the opportunities available in Leek High’s Sixth Form.
Corina, who is studying for A levels in Photography, English Literature and Psychology, and hoping to go on to university to study for a degree in Photography, said: “Leek High offers a great range of opportunities as it now works in partnership with Leek College to offer a wider choice. I study photography at college and I really enjoy it.”
Fourteen-year-old Leek High student Richard Turnock, a farmer’s son, from Onecote, visited the event with his parents, Gwen and David, seeking information on a range of careers including law and banking. He said: “I don’t know what I want to do when I leave school but I do know that I don’t want to follow my dad into farming because it just doesn’t really interest me.”
Westwood High student Eloise Boden, 14, was interested in the joint working between Leek High and Leek College and took away information on the BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design offered by the college, which she hopes could pave the way for a career in merchandising and window dressing.
Several students visited the Post and Times’ stand manned by reporter Abbey Buxton to find out about opportunities for working in the media. Leek High sixth former Alice Goldstraw, 16, said: “I’m quite a chatty person who is always getting told off for talking too much so I think a career in broadcasting, working in local radio, would be good for me.”
