A record number of prospective students and their parents toured Leek High Specialist Technology School at its annual open evening last Thursday.
Delighted Acting Head teacher John Spencer said: “We saw our best ever turnout because people in Leek realise that they have a choice and they are recognising our excellent results.”
Visitors viewed hands-on experiments in the science labs seeing a cow’s lungs inflated with a bike pump, a pig’s heart and eyes being dissected, and having the opportunity to view slides of their own cheek cells under the microscope. The language room became a French café for the evening and, in the food technology room visitors could sample treats cooked for them by year 10 students.
Mum Sharon Millward from Leek who toured the school with daughter, Sophie, currently a pupil at St Edward’s Middle School, said: “Although we don’t live in the catchment area for Leek High, I would like Sophie to come here because it’s a small school and it has such an excellent reputation.
“I think Leek High is a very warm and friendly place and I like the fact that The Meadows Special School is on the same site and the schools work so well together.”
Cheddleton dad Ray Payne, who accompanied his daughter, Molly, to the open evening, said: “We’ve visited both high schools and it’s a difficult choice as Leek is fortunate in not having any bad schools. We’ve yet to make our minds up.”
Ruth Davies, a year 10 student at Leek High, was cooking in the food technology room. She told visitors: “There are lots of really good facilities here and I like the gym and the trampolines.”
Pru Matiaha, a year 9 student who was conducting experiments in the biology lab, said: “We have great fun at Leek High and there are lots of nice teachers. I think science is my favourite school subject as we do such a lot of interesting things.”
Earlier on, Acting Head John Spencer told parents and their sons and daughters: “We have a good story to tell at Leek High as, last year, we were in the top 1% of schools in terms of progress and this year we will match it.
“More students than ever before gained five or more GCSEs with top grades and nobody left school this year without any qualifications. All our students make terrific progress and we help them become rounded individuals with many extra curricular activities.
“Every student matters at Leek High and our trips abroad to places like Este, Leek’s twin town, are not just for the advantaged few. You don’t need to just take my word for it – check the recent Ofsted report. Inspectors praised our broad and personalised curriculum and our teaching and learning.”
